Oct 22, 2024

2025 Krell Institute Graduate Fellowships

Sponsored by Krell Institute

Krell Institute manages three of the United States’ leading four-year, federally funded science and engineering graduate fellowships for incoming and enrolled Ph.D. students.

Each program offers a comprehensive set of financial benefits, access to DOE/NNSA laboratories, collaboration and information sharing via an annual fellowship meeting, opportunities for professional development, and the support of a growing community.

Fellowship funding for the 2025-26 academic year begins September 1, 2025.

Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship

Established in 2006, the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Stewardship Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA SSGF) provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. in areas of interest to stewardship science, such as high energy density physics, nuclear science, or materials under extreme conditions.

Fellows receive:

  • a $45,000 yearly stipend
  • payment of full tuition and required fees at any accredited U.S. university
  • and an annual professional development allowance

The fellowship also includes a 12-week research experience at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, or Sandia National Laboratories (California and New Mexico).

Eligibility:

U.S. citizens who are senior undergraduates or students in their first or second year of doctoral study.

Deadline: January 14, 2025

Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

Established in 1991, the Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) provides financial support for students pursuing doctoral degrees in fields that use high-performance computing (HPC) to solve complex problems in science and engineering.

The program also funds doctoral candidates in applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, computer engineering, or computational science − in one of those departments or their academic equivalent − who undertake research in enabling technologies for emerging high-performance systems.

Fellows receive:

  • a $45,000 yearly stipend
  • payment of full tuition and required fees at any accredited U.S. university
  • and an annual professional development allowance

The DOE CSGF is guided by a comprehensive program of study that requires focused coursework in science and engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, and HPC. Fellows also complete a 12-week research practicum experience at one of 22 DOE laboratory sites, with exposure to distinguished scientists, multidisciplinary research groups, and some of the country’s most powerful supercomputers.

Eligibility:

U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who are senior undergraduates or students in their first year of doctoral study.

Deadline: January 16, 2025

Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Laboratory Residency Graduate Fellowship

The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Laboratory Residency Graduate Fellowship (DOE NNSA LRGF) provides outstanding benefits and opportunities for doctoral students to work at premier national laboratories while pursuing degrees in fields relevant to the stewardship of the nation’s nuclear stockpile − including engineering (pulsed power, etc.), physics, materials, or mathematics and computational science.

Fellows receive:

  • a $45,000 yearly stipend
  • payment of full tuition and required fees at any accredited U.S. university
  • and an annual professional development allowance

Fellowships include at least two 12-week research residencies at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories (California and New Mexico), or the Nevada National Security Site. Fellows are encouraged to extend these residencies to carry out thesis research and other studies at the five DOE NNSA facilities.

Eligibility:

U.S. citizens in their first, second, or third year of doctoral study and who will have at least 18 months remaining in their academic program as of September 1, 2025.

Deadline: March 12, 2025
