Looking to further your research abroad? Whether you’re a postdoc or a more experienced researcher, the Humboldt Research Fellowship Program offers you the exciting opportunity to conduct a long-term research project in Germany!

Please note that there are two separate versions of the program: The Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme for Postdoctoral Researchers (PhD < 4 years ago) and the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (PhD < 12 years ago).

Humboldt Research Fellowship Program for Postdoctoral Researchers

Through the Humboldt Research Fellowships for postdoctoral researchers, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars—who do not currently work or reside in Germany and who completed their doctorates less than four years ago—to spend extended periods of research (6–24 months) in Germany. Scientists and scholars from all disciplines and countries may apply.

Fellowship specifications:

The research plan is carried out in cooperation with academic hosts at research institutions in Germany. Applicants choose their own research topic and academic host. Details of the research plan, including the intended duration of the fellowship, must be agreed with the intended host before applying.

The fellowship stipend is 2,670 EUR per month. This includes a mobility lump sum and a contribution toward health and liability insurance.

Application requirements:

  1. A doctorate or comparable academic degree (PhD, CSc or equivalent), completed less than four years ago prior to the date of application. Candidates who will complete their doctoral degrees within 6 months are also eligible to apply, provided that they submit the manuscript of their dissertation or publications containing the results of their dissertation.
  2. Academic publications reviewed according to international standards and printed in journals and/or by publishing houses.
  3. Confirmation that research facilities are available and a mentoring agreement and detailed expert’s statement by an academic host at a research institution in Germany.
  4. Expert reviews from the doctoral supervisor and one other academic qualified to give well founded comments on the applicant’s qualification, preferably including reviewers not working at the applicant’s own institute.
  5. Language skills: humanities or social sciences and medicine: good knowledge of German if necessary to carry out the research successfully; otherwise a good knowledge of English; natural sciences and engineering: good knowledge of German or English.

Through the Humboldt Research Fellowships for experienced researchers, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars from outside Germany—who completed their doctorates less than twelve years ago—to spend extended periods of research (6-18 months; may be divided up into a maximum of three blocks) in Germany. Scientists and scholars from all disciplines and countries may apply.

Fellowship specifications:

Candidates are expected to have their own clearly defined research profile. They should be working at least at the level of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Group Leader or be able to document years of independent research work.

The research plan is carried out in cooperation with academic hosts at research institutions in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and host in Germany. Details of the research plan, including the fellowship duration, must be agreed with the intended host before applying.

Application requirements:

  1. A doctorate or comparable academic degree (PhD, CSc or equivalent) completed less than twelve years prior to the date of application. If it is not possible or customary to take a doctorate in the candidate’s subject or country, an application may be submitted up to 16 years after completing a Master’s or Diploma degree.
  2. The candidate’s own research profile documented by a list of academic publications reviewed according to international standards and printed in journals and/or by publishing houses.
  3. Confirmation that research facilities are available in addition to a mentoring agreement and a detailed expert’s statement by an academic host at a research institution in Germany.
  4. Two expert reviews from important collaborative partners and/or academics from the candidate’s own institute and, if possible, from abroad.
