The Department of Art’s graduate programs provide an interdisciplinary and dynamic environment for creative practice and scholarly inquiry. Whether pursuing an MFA in Studio Art or an MA/PhD in Art History & Criticism, students engage with cutting-edge research, innovative creative practices, and exceptional mentorship from award-winning faculty.
Located in the Staller Center for the Arts and in close proximity to New York City’s cultural hub, the department offers access to public gallery spaces, private studios, and a globally connected art scene. Program Benefits
Graduate students in Art History & Criticism and Studio Art at Stony Brook University’s Department of Art are encouraged to participate in experimentation and innovation in their courses. Faculty in the program are internationally renowned scholars, artists, art historians, curators, and teachers. Graduates go on to careers as historians, writers and curators, artists, researchers and educators, consultants, and arts professionals in museums, galleries, and arts institutions.

Eligibility
Admission to the graduate programs within the Department of Art are at the discretion of the graduate Art faculty with final approval of the Graduate School. Qualified applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum GPA of 3.0, preferably in a relevant field.

- A statement of purpose
- 3 letters of recommendation
- Documented proficiency in English for international students (TOEFL or IELTS)
