This list of upcoming fellowship deadlines includes study and research opportunities in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, including the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford. Other programs seek journalists, scientists, policy professionals, curators, artists, high school seniors, and students and researchers focused on sustainable energy, philosophy, national security, wildlife, Germany, art, social impact, and the humanities.   • Fellowships at the Wilson Center: Through an international competition, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars offers 9-month residential fellowships to outstanding scholars, practitioners, journalists, and public intellectuals to take part in its non-partisan dialogue. Fellows conduct research and write in their areas of interest. The Center accepts non-advocacy, policy-relevant fellowship proposals that address key challenges of past, present, and future issues confronting the United States and the world. Academic applicants must have a doctorate. For other applicants, an equivalent level of professional achievement is expected. Offers a stipend of up to $85,000. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Morehead-Cain Scholars: The Morehead-Cain is a four-year merit scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It promises 4 years of full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books, a laptop, and a four-year Summer Enrichment Program comprising diverse, customized experiences that begin the summer before freshman year. To be eligible, you must be a competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on track to graduate high school in the spring, unmarried, and without children. Admission to UNC is separate from applying for the Morehead-Cain, and the Morehead-Cain application is varied by state or country, but all deadlines are in October. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • APS/British Academy Fellowship for Research in London: Since 1933, the American Philosophical Society (APS) has awarded small grants to scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in all areas of knowledge. The APS offers an exchange postdoctoral fellowship for a minimum of 1-2 months of research in the archives and libraries of London. This award includes travel expenses between the United States and the United Kingdom and a monthly subsistence paid by the APS. Applicants are expected to have a doctorate or to have published work of doctoral quality. Funding is offered up to a maximum of $6,000. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Camargo Core Program: The Camargo Foundation, located in Cassis, France, is a residential center offering programs in the Arts and Humanities. It offers time and space to think, create, and connect in a contemplative environment. Applications from all countries, nationalities, and career levels are welcome. Scholars & Thinkers (including professionals and practitioners in creative fields such as curators, critics, urban planners, independent scholars, etc.) should be connected to the Arts and Humanities and focused on French and Francophone cultures, including but not limited to cross-cultural studies that engage the cultures and influences of the Mediterranean region. Artists, in all disciplines, are the primary creators of a new work/project. Roundtrip transportation and a stipend of $1,000 USD per month are available. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • TomKat Center Postdoctoral Fellowships in Sustainable Energy: The TomKat Center Postdoctoral Fellowships support outstanding recent PhD graduates working on projects that explore new research directions in sustainable energy and its intersection with food, water, the environment, and human health. TomKat Fellows will receive support for up to two years to work on creative, multidisciplinary research. The TomKat Fellowship provides annual support as a salary of $65,000 or the minimum postdoctoral salary rate stipulated by Stanford University, whichever is greater. Foreign scholars must have or be able to obtain an H1B visa (to receive the award as salary). Citizenship is not a selection factor. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Welder Wildlife Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program: The Rob and Bessie Welder Wildlife Foundation’s research fellowship program is designed to support exemplary graduate students and innovative wildlife research. Fellowships are awarded directly to properly accredited U.S. colleges or universities for graduate students who are approved candidates for M.S. or Ph.D. degrees after project proposals have been approved by the Foundation. Students working on or near the Welder Wildlife Refuge in Texas are provided dormitory apartment living quarters, utilities, office space, computer access, and field and laboratory facilities as are available. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • German Historical Institute Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships: The GHI awards short-term fellowships of 1-5 months to European and North American doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars to pursue research projects that draw upon primary sources in the United States. We are particularly interested in research projects that fit into the following fields: German and European history; The history of German-American relations; The role of Germany and the USA in international relations; American history (European doctoral and postdoctoral scholars only). The fellowship is open to both doctoral and postdoctoral scholars based in North America and Europe. The monthly stipend is €2,000 for doctoral students and €3,400 for postdoctoral scholars. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • William D. Clarke, Sr. Diplomatic Security Fellowship: Through the William D. Clarke, Sr. Diplomatic Security Fellowship, you will embark on a career path that will take you around the world, providing protection to U.S. personnel, facilities, and information while supporting diplomacy. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the Clarke DS Fellowship is a two-year graduate fellowship program designed for individuals who want to pursue a master’s degree and a career as a Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) Special Agent in the Foreign Service. DSS Special Agents are sworn federal law enforcement officers. Clarke DS Fellows receive up to $42,000 annually during the two years for tuition, room, books, and other academic expenses. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Peace Corps Volunteers: Peace Corps Volunteers work abroad for a period of 24 months after 3 months of training. Volunteers work with governments, schools, non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, and entrepreneurs in education, hunger, business, information technology, agriculture, and the environment. Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 75 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico, South America, Europe, the Pacific Islands, and the Middle East. PCVs receive a living allowance, free travel, and transition rewards after completing 27 months of service. Peace Corps is open to U.S. citizens age 18 and older who are curious about the world and committed to helping others. Check the website for deadlines by opportunity. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Tarbell Fellowship For Early Career Journalists: The Tarbell Fellowship is a one-year program for early-career journalists intent on improving the world. The fellowship represents a unique opportunity to do great journalism, covering topics that could have a major impact on the lives of billions, such as global poverty and existential risks. Fellows receive a stipend of up to $50,000 to support placements at major publications and independent freelance reporting. The program incorporates expert speakers, feedback & mentorship from experienced journalists, and a two-week journalism summit in Oxford. The fellowship is entirely remote. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Title VIII Combined Research and Language Training (CRLT) Program: For U.S. graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars seeking to complete overseas, policy-relevant research and increase language proficiency. Lasting three to nine consecutive months, it can include international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Administered by American Councils, awards range from $7,000 to $25,000 depending on the duration of the overseas research period. Programs are available in the Balkans, the Baltics, The Caucasus, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Research takes place between June and August of the following year. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • KAUST Fellowship: The KAUST Fellowship is the general scholarship program of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). All admitted students receive the benefits of the KAUST Fellowship which includes full tuition, a living stipend of $20-30K, housing, and other benefits. All applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. There is no minimum GPA requirement but the average GPA of admitted students is 3.7 out of 4.0. KAUST encourages students seeking to earn graduate degrees from Saudi Arabia and around the world to apply.   • Title VIII Research Scholar Program: For U.S. graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars seeking to complete overseas, policy-relevant research.   • SAADA Archival Creators Fellowship Program: Fellows will create archival collections that reflect the histories and perspectives of marginalized groups within the South Asian American community. These include communities that are working class, undocumented, LGBTQ+, Dalit, Muslim, Indo-Caribbean, or otherwise overlooked in mainstream South Asian American narratives. This fellowship program is open to all US-based individuals who are members of the community they will be archiving, or in which they otherwise have deep existing relationships. No formal archival training is necessary, but applicants should have a strong demonstrable interest and commitment to community memory and storytelling. / Apply by October 1, 2023

 

  • Archbishop Tutu Fellowship: The Tutu Leadership Fellowship Programme welcomes an elite group of Africa’s highest potential young leaders, between 30 and 40 years of age, representing a wide range of sectors. Offered on a part-time basis over six months, the Programme includes two 9-day Group Learning Modules with an impressive array of distinguished leaders and faculty. These are intensive interactive workshops; one at the historic Mont Fleur conference facility (South Africa), and the other split between Oxford University and London (UK). Candidates must be nominated, nominations open in early August. / Apply by October 2, 2023

 

  • Dr. Richard M. Hunt Fellowship for the Study of German Politics, Society, and Culture: The fellowship supports American academics whose research contributes to the scholarly discourse on contemporary German society and Germany’s political, cultural, and social history. Fellows receive a $7,500 stipend, which covers transatlantic airfare, domestic travel, and room and board for a minimum of 28 days. Fellows are required to work closely with the ACG to organize a detailed itinerary before the stipend is released. Candidates must be in the relatively early stages of their career, in the final stage, or have recently completed a PhD, and committed to furthering the transatlantic relationship. / Apply by October 2, 2023

 

  • Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowships: The Anna-Maria and Stephen M. Kellen Fellowships provide an opportunity for exceptional German print, broadcast, and new media journalists who live and work in Berlin to travel to the United States to conduct interviews with policymakers, opinion leaders, and experts while doing in-depth reporting. Fellows receive a $5,000 stipend, which covers transatlantic airfare, domestic travel, and room and board, for a minimum of 21 days. Fellows work closely with the Program Director to organize a detailed itinerary. / Apply by October 2, 2023

 

  • John Hope Franklin Dissertation Fellowship: The John Hope Franklin Dissertation Fellowship is designed to support an outstanding doctoral student at an American university or an exceptional American doctoral student abroad who is completing a dissertation. Fellows must be admitted to candidacy, have completed all other coursework, and be prepared to devote full time for 12 months – with no teaching obligations – to dissertation research and writing. The award is for $28,000 and above. / Apply by October 2, 2023

 

  • McCloy Fellowship on Global Trends: The McCloy fellowships allow American and German experts from journalism, the public sector, think tanks, nonprofits, law, and cultural organizations to research and assess the most pressing topics on the transatlantic agenda while engaging with their counterparts overseas. Proposals must address one of the following global trends: climate change and sustainability, demographics and social change, technological breakthroughs, and urbanization. The fellowships allow Americans to travel to Germany and Germans to travel to the United States for at least three weeks to conduct research. Fellows receive a $5,000 stipend, which covers transatlantic airfare, domestic travel, and room and board for a minimum of 21 days. Candidates are 45 years of age or younger and have a minimum of 5 years of relevant, full-time work experience. / Apply by October 2, 2023

 

  • NNSA Graduate Fellowship Program: The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory offers year-long assignments to qualified graduate students to work across the National Nuclear Security Administration’s nuclear security mission in infrastructure, stockpile stewardship, and nonproliferation. Eligible applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application or have completed a graduate degree within 18 months prior to the time of application. Preferred areas of study include international relations, accounting, mechanical engineering, physics, etc. Fellows will be placed at a specific site and will receive an annual salary of $52,000 with benefits. / Apply by October 2, 2023

 

  • Acumen UK Fellowship: Each year, the Acumen UK Fellowship selects and equips around 20 builders across sectors, places, and backgrounds who are redefining success in the UK with the practices and community needed to deepen and sustain their impact. The Fellowship is a fully-funded, year-long leadership program where Fellows remain in their role while taking part in a series of immersive residentials, virtual workshops, and group practice. This is where practical skills meet moral imagination – and the program is designed to increase a Fellow’s capacity to take on long-standing problems of poverty. Upon completing the program, Fellows become part of Acumen’s global community of social innovators, The Foundry, committed to lifelong learning, collaboration, and accompaniment as they build a dignity-based world. / Apply by October 4, 2023

 

  • Rhodes Scholarships: The Rhodes Scholarship, established in 1903, is the oldest international scholarship program in the world and one of the most prestigious. Administered by the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, the program offers over 100 fully-funded Scholarships each year for full-time postgraduate study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom – one of the world’s leading universities.   • National Humanities Center Residential Fellowships: The National Humanities Center in North Carolina will offer up to 40 residential fellowships for advanced study in the humanities from September through May. In addition to scholars from all humanities fields, the Center accepts individuals from the natural and social sciences, the arts, the professions, and public life who are engaged in humanistic projects. The Center is international in scope and welcomes applications from scholars outside the U.S. Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent scholarly credentials. The Center seeks to provide at least half salary and covers travel expenses for Fellows and dependents. / Apply by October 5, 2023

 

  • Wellcome Trust Early-Career Awards: The scheme of early-career awards provides funding for early-career researchers from any discipline who are ready to develop their research identity. Innovative projects will deliver shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health, and well-being. By the end of the award, fellows will be ready to lead their own independent research program. A Wellcome Early-Career Award provides a salary for the grant holder and up to £400,000 for research expenses. The host organization should be based in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or low- or middle-income countries (apart from India and mainland China). / October 5, 2023

 

  • Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student needs. There are multiple deadlines per year, so make sure to check out the website. / Apply by October 5, 2023

 

  • National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program: The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $27,500 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world. Applicants need not be citizens of the United States; however, they must be candidates for the doctoral degree at a graduate school within the United States. / Apply by October 5, 2023

 

  • Anne McLaren Fellowships: Applications are invited for The University of Nottingham Anne McLaren Fellowships, which are targeted at exceptional female scientists and engineers who are typically under-represented in these subjects and wish to establish a research career in the UK. The Fellowships are offered in a range of academic units at the University of Nottingham and provide a recognized first step into an independent research career. Each fellowship offers 3 years of independent funding to conduct research while based at the University of Nottingham campuses in the UK, China, or Malaysia. / Apply by October 6, 2023
