The program offers advanced training in historical musicology, ethnomusicology, theory, composition, creative practice, and critical inquiry leading to the degree of PhD in Music. All graduate students are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary possibilities and to take classes across the five programs and in other departments. Graduate students are awarded five years of guaranteed funding (including living expenses) when accepted to a PhD program. This funding includes two years of paid teaching as a Teaching Fellow and a fully-funded, teaching-free year in which to complete the dissertation.
