Stanford University, based in Stanford, California offers a fully funded PhD in Music. The doctoral program is conferred upon candidates who have demonstrated substantial scholarship and the ability to conduct independent research and analysis in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, or Computer-Based Music Theory and Acoustics, based at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). In the first year, all students receive full tuition and a fellowship stipend. During years 2-5, students receive tuition and a salaried assistantship. Two summers are also provided and include tuition and a salary as a research assistant.
