If you’re interested in making a move to some of the northernmost parts of the world, these fellowships could make that a reality! This list includes opportunities in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark. You could study Norwegian literature, do graduate work at a Scandinavian university, or work for the Google News Laboratory, among many other opportunities. ASF Fellowships for Americans in the Nordic Countries
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers year-long fellowships of up to $23,000 and short-term (1-3 months) fellowships of up to $5,000 to graduate students (preferably conducting dissertation research) and academic professionals interested in pursuing research or creative-arts projects in the Nordic region (Denmark, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sámpi, and Sweden). ASF’s award program for study and research abroad has been the Foundation’s most long-standing commitment to educational exchange. Awards are made in all fields.
American-Scandinavian Foundation Grants
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers grants (up to $5,000) to individuals to pursue research, study or creative arts projects in one or more Scandinavian countries for 1-3 months. Grants are considered especially suitable for post-graduate scholars, professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or study visits. Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents. Candidates must have at least some ability in the language of the host country.
Bicentennial Swedish-American Exchange Fund
The Bicentennial Fund awards grants up to SEK 30,000 in support of intensive research trips to Sweden of 2-4 weeks in length. Applicants should have well-developed projects within the prioritized fields of politics, public administration, working life, human environment, mass media, business and industry, education or culture. The grant is specifically intended for professional enrichment and is thus not applicable to work related to academic degrees, programs or conferences. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible.
EDUFI Fellowships
The EDUFI Fellowships programme is open to young Doctoral level students and researchers from all countries and from all academic fields. The primary target group in the EDUFI Fellowship programme are such Doctoral level students who will be doing their Doctorate (or Double Doctorate) at a Finnish university. The scholarship period may vary from 3 to 12 months. The monthly allowance is 1,500 Euros. The scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Finland for a single person. The programme is open to candidates of all foreign nationalities.
EURIAS (European Institutes for Advanced Study) Fellowship Programme
EURIAS offers 10-month residencies in one of the 16 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Budapest, Cambridge, Delmenhorst, Edinburgh, Freiburg, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar, Zürich. The Institutes for Advanced Study support the focused, self-directed work of outstanding researchers. EURIAS is designed for experienced researchers having a minimum of 2 years of research experience post PhD. EURIAS offers approximately 33 fellowships (17 junior, 16 senior positions). The fellowship includes a living allowance (€26,000 for juniors and €38,000 for seniors), accommodation, research budget, and travel expenses.
Fulbright-Saastamoinen Foundation Award in Health and Environmental Sciences (Fulbright Finland)
The Fulbright-Saastamoinen Foundation Grant in Health and Environmental Sciences is available for lecturing and research visits of 5-9 months at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio. Disciplines include Medical Sciences, Global Health, Pharmacy, Environmental Sciences, Environmental Health, Environmental and Medical Physics, Biosciences, Nursing Science. It is offered for a period of 5-9 months, starting in either September or January. The award includes free housing, arranged and paid for by the University of Eastern Finland. Rank of full or associate professor with a PhD (or other terminal degree such as MFA, JD, or MD) required. The allowance is 5000 Euro/month.
Fulbright Schuman Innovation Grants
The Innovation Grants are designed to support work that can create better transatlantic understanding of issues at the heart of the U.S.-EU relationship, particularly at the intersection of policy and technology. The grants will give preference to proposals focused on EU or U.S.-EU approaches to the issues of data privacy and protection. Successful proposals should address the technological and policy aspects of data privacy and protection. Grants of 2K-3K Euro/month, plus travel allowances, are available for U.S. and EU students and scholars. Check website for deadlines, some may vary by citizenship.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program for Study/Research
A U.S. Student Fulbright Grant allows for individually designed study/research projects that will take place during one academic year (9-12 months) in a country outside the U.S. Applicants design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research awards are available in approximately 140 countries. For recent BA/BS graduates, graduate and doctoral students, and young professionals including artists, musicians, writers, journalists, and those in law, business, and other professional fields. Undergraduate and graduate students must apply through their institution; professionals and former students can apply through their alma mater or At Large.
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETA)
The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place recent college graduates and young professionals from the U.S. in classrooms abroad for up to 1 year to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETA’s help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for English Teaching Assistant Programs can apply to only one country. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.
Fulbright Specialist Program
The Fulbright Specialist Program is a unique opportunity for U.S. academics and established professionals to engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions in over 150 countries. Specialists, who represent a wide range of professional and academic disciplines, are competitively selected to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster based on their knowledge, skill sets, and ability to make a significant contribution to projects overseas. Specialists receive full funding to participate in Fulbright Specialist projects, including travel, stipend and lodging.
Google News Lab Fellowship
The Google News Lab Fellowship offers students interested in journalism and technology the opportunity to spend the summer working at relevant organizations across the world to gain valuable experience and make lifelong contacts and friends. Fellows receive a stipend and a travel budget during the 10-week program, which runs from June-August. Available in the U.S., U.K., South Korea, Germany, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Ireland. Deadlines and eligibility requirements vary by country, check site.
High North Fellowship
The High North Fellowship program offers scholarships to students from Canada, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the US who attend an institution in Northern Norway as part of their higher education. The program is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Each fellowship recipient receives a monthly stipend of approximately NOK 9 440, and a travel grant of the same amount. Institutions of higher education in Norway do not charge tuition from international students, and the stipend is intended to cover housing and living expenses. The program is mainly targeted at students at the master’s and bachelor’s level, but is also open to PhD students.
Mobility Grant for Norwegian Language and Literature
Mobility Grant for Norwegian Language and Literature shall facilitate shorter study/research stays in Norway for foreign students. The grant must be used for fieldwork in Norway in connection with the thesis for a Master or PhD in Norwegian language and/or Norwegian literature. The scholarship is awarded for study stay of 1-3 months at a Norwegian higher education / research institution. The grant will cover expenses in connection with the research stay in Norway. The grant is currently NOK 10 092 per month. Fieldwork in one of the three northernmost counties in Norway will in addition imply an extra travel grant of NOK 1,000. Grants for travel to and from Norway are not awarded.
NORAM Scholarship for Americans to Study in Norway
NORAM scholarships provide financial support for Americans to study or conduct research in areas of mutual importance to Norway and the United States to strengthen the ties of friendship between the two countries. Every year, NORAM offers up to 10 scholarships ranging from $1,500 – $5,000 to American students, based on merit and need. The size of the individual grants depends on the research subject, purpose and the intended length of stay in Norway. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and have completed a Bachelor’s degree before the application deadline.
Rotary Peace Fellowship
Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 individuals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at one of our peace centers in Australia, England, Japan, Sweden and the U.S. These fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, and RT transportation. Two types of fellowships are available: (1) 15-24 month master’s degree fellowships at premier universities in fields related to peace and conflict prevention and resolution and (2) 3-month fellowships for experienced professionals working in peace-related fields at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. Wallenberg Academy Fellows
The purpose of the Wallenberg Academy Fellows program in Sweden is to give young researchers working conditions that enables them to focus on research and tackle difficult, long-term research questions. The program addresses young researchers in medicine, natural sciences, engineering and technology, humanities and social sciences. Swedish universities are invited to nominate candidates for the program. The Swedish Academies will evaluate and select the most promising researchers and the universities will then take long-term responsibility for these individuals. Fellows will receive grants for 5 years of SEK 1,000,000 – 2,000,000/year.
