If you’re always wanted to live in France, here is your chance! This list covers programs for all career levels from current undergraduates to established faculty and professionals. There are opportunities in a large variety of disciplines, including the arts, social sciences, STEM fields, and architecture, among others. A variety of Fulbright awards are also included. Nantes Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Program
The Nantes Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Program offers nine-month fellowships in Nantes, France. IAS Nantes awards fellowships to outstanding researchers of all career levels, from postdoctoral researchers to senior scientists. IAS Nantes offers 15 fellowship positions. Applications are expected from the fields of the social sciences and the humanities (SSH) and all research fields. The Fellows will benefit from the IAS’s support and conducive scientific environment, in an interdisciplinary cohort of fellows and close relation to the local research potential. IAS Nantes offers a living allowance, social security coverage, accommodation, a complete workspace, plus coverage of travel expenses.
Camargo Core Program
The Camargo Foundation, located in Cassis, France, is a residential center offering programming in the Arts and Humanities. It offers time and space in a contemplative environment to think, create, and connect. Applications from all countries, nationalities, and career levels are welcome. Scholars & Thinkers (including professionals and practitioners in creative fields such as curators, critics, urban planners, independent scholars, etc.) should be connected to the Arts and Humanities working on French and Francophone cultures, including but not limited to cross-cultural studies that engage the cultures and influences of the Mediterranean region. Artists, in all disciplines, who are the primary creators of a new work/project. Roundtrip transportation and a stipend of 1,000 USD per month is available.
Chateaubriand Fellowship – Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS)
The Chateaubriand Fellowship – Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS) provides PhD candidates currently enrolled at a U.S. university the opportunity to conduct research in France in any discipline of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The fellowship lasts for 4-8 months and provides travel, health insurance and a monthly stipend of 1,500 Euros. Candidates do not have to be U.S. citizens, but they must be enrolled in an American university.
Chateaubriand Fellowship – Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
The Chateaubriand Fellowship – Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) provides funding for PhD candidates currently enrolled in a U.S. university to conduct research in France at a French university, a school of engineering, a national laboratory or a private enterprise, with a link to a Doctoral School. The fellowship is for 4-10 months, provides travel, health insurance and a monthly stipend of 1,400 Euros. Non-U.S. nationals are eligible to apply for a Chateaubriand Fellowship as long as they are currently enrolled in an American university.
CIMI LabEx Post-doctoral Fellowships
CIMI LabEx offers funded post-doctoral positions for one year that may be extended for a second year. Positions are open to holders of a doctorate in mathematics or computer science obtained in France or in a foreign country. Offers are not theme-based and all mathematical and computer science disciplines are welcome. Selection is based on excellence in scientific accomplishment and the quality of the scientific project. The scientific project must be written together with a member of either IMT or IRIT or both institutes. Fellows receive a salary of €2,330 per month and health insurance and social coverage.
CIMI Master Fellowships
CIMI provides fellowships for students enrolled in a Master’s course in Mathematics or Computer Science in one of the programs associated with CIMI. Fellowships are open to French and foreign students and awarded on the basis of the quality of their academic records. Candidates must be in either the first or second year of their Master’s program. Fellows receive a stipend of 600€ per month for first year students and 1,000€ per month for second year students, for a period of 10 months. Fellows must reside in Toulouse, France for the duration of the fellowship.
French Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme
The French Institutes for Advanced Study Fellowship Programme offers 10-month fellowships in the seven Institutes of Aix-Marseille, Loire Valley (Orléans-Tours), Lyon, Montpellier, Nantes, Paris, and Rennes. It welcomes applications from high-level international scholars and scientists to develop their innovative research projects in France. The call is open to all disciplines in the social sciences and the humanities (SSH) and all research fields. FIAS awards fellowships to outstanding researchers of all career levels, from postdoctoral researchers to senior scientists. The minimum requirement is a PhD + 2 years of research experience at the time of the application.
FSCIS Visiting Junior Scholar Fellowship
The France-Stanford Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (FSCIS) Visiting Junior Scholar Fellowship provides funding up to $7,000 for a project of 2-4 months. available to (1) Scholars who have completed a PhD no more than three years from the date of applying for the fellowship and who hold a tenure-track/permanent (rather than post-doctoral) position. These may be Stanford-based scholars seeking a research visit at a French institution or scholars based in a French institution seeking a research visit at Stanford, and (2) Postdoctoral students. These may be Stanford-based postdocs seeking a research visit at a French institution or postdocs based in a French-institution seeking a research visit at Stanford.
Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program
The Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program comprises approximately forty distinguished lecturing, distinguished research and distinguished lecturing/research awards ranging from three to 12 months. Awards in the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program are viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Scholar Program. Candidates should be eminent scholars and have a significant publication and teaching record.
Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships (ETA)
The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Programs place recent college graduates and young professionals from the U.S. in classrooms abroad for up to 1 year to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETA’s help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for English Teaching Assistant Programs can apply to only one country. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.
Fulbright Global Scholar Award
The Fulbright Global Scholar Award allows U.S. academics and professionals to engage in multi-country, trans-regional projects. As a truly worldwide award, U.S. scholars will be able to propose research or combined teaching/research activity in two to three countries with flexible schedule options; trips can be conducted within one academic year or spread over two consecutive years. Projects are welcome in all disciplines, as well as those with an interdisciplinary focus. Minimum length of the total grant is 3 months and the maximum is 6 months.
Fulbright International Education Administrators Program
The International Education Administrators (IEA) seminars help U.S. higher education administrators establish lasting connections within the social, cultural and higher education systems of other countries. Selected administrators have the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about the host country’s higher education system and establish networks of U.S. and international colleagues during a two-week fully funded visit abroad. The IEA Seminars are open to experienced international education administrators and senior administrators. Deadlines vary by country.
Fulbright/National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship
The Fulbright/National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship is a new component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program that provides opportunities for U.S. citizens to participate in an academic year of overseas travel and digital storytelling in up to three countries on a globally significant social or environmental topic. In addition to receiving Fulbright benefits (for travel, stipend, health, etc.), Fellows will receive instruction in digital storytelling techniques and will be paired with one or more National Geographic editors. Applicants may submit proposals for grants to 1-3 foreign countries.
Fulbright Schuman Innovation Grants
The Innovation Grants are designed to support work that can create better transatlantic understanding of issues at the heart of the U.S.-EU relationship, particularly at the intersection of policy and technology. The grants will give preference to proposals focused on EU or U.S.-EU approaches to the issues of data privacy and protection. Successful proposals should address the technological and policy aspects of data privacy and protection. Grants of 2K-3K Euro/month, plus travel allowances, are available for U.S. and EU students and scholars. Check website for deadlines, some may vary by citizenship.
Fulbright Specialist Program
The Fulbright Specialist Program is a unique opportunity for U.S. academics and established professionals to engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions in over 150 countries. Specialists, who represent a wide range of professional and academic disciplines, are competitively selected to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster based on their knowledge, skill sets, and ability to make a significant contribution to projects overseas. Specialists receive full funding to participate in Fulbright Specialist projects, including travel, stipend and lodging.
Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program
The Core Fulbright Scholar Program offers over 500 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards of 2-12 months in over 125 countries. Opportunities are available for college and university faculty and administrators as well as for professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, lawyers, independent scholars and many others. In addition to several new program models designed to meet the changing needs of U.S. academics and professionals, Fulbright is offering more opportunities for flexible, multi-country grants. Only U.S. citizens are eligible to apply.
Humanity In Action Fellowship
The HIA Fellowship programs bring together international groups of college students and recent graduates to explore national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today. This 4-week summer fellowship in Europe is highly interdisciplinary, and features daily lectures and discussions with renowned academics, journalists, and activists. Eligible applicants are students and recent graduates (including international students) of universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and the United States. HIA covers the costs of participation and accommodation. Deadlines vary by country.

Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships
The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships provide funding for students interning over the summer in the U.S. Embassies in London or Paris, or the Secretary of State’s Office in Washington, DC. The Harriman Fellowship is nationally competitive and highly selective, offering a $5,000 stipend for travel and living expenses. Candidates must be chosen by the Department of State for internships in London, Paris, or Washington, DC, a US citizen, and a current undergraduate junior or senior at a US university. Note that the deadline for completion of State Department online internship applications is in October.
Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship in Architecture
The Richard Morris Hunt Fellowship is awarded annually to an architect, potential leader in the field, alternatively French or American. This prestigious $25,000 award offers motivated architects an opportunity to travel for six months in the United States or in France, in a total immersion, for research and study of the approach to preservation, philosophical, historic as well as technical, in the other’s country, including comparisons of codes and regulations as well as of professional training.
Teaching Assistant Program in France
The Teaching Assistant Program in France offers the opportunity to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages. Each year, over 1,100 American citizens and permanent residents teach in public schools across all regions of metropolitan France and in the overseas departments of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion. Most TAPIF program participants have just finished their university studies. We also welcome people between the age of 20-35 as of October 1 who have just finished their graduate studies, young professionals looking for a new challenge, etc. The monthly salary is approximately 780 Euro.
Young Leaders Program
The French-American Foundation is offering a two-year program for French and American professionals between the ages of 30 and 40. Alternating between the US and France, the fellows spend five days together (each year) discussing issues of common concern, meeting with local and global specialists, and getting to know one another. The Foundation covers Young Leaders’ travel and lodging expenses for both meetings. Applicants are mid- or late- career professionals from every possible background, whose common link is their passion about forging bonds to influence the common good.
