With a Master’s degree in French and Francophone Studies, you can pursue various career paths that require language proficiency and cultural knowledge.
Fully-funded Master’s programs can be difficult to find. Because most universities focus their funding towards Ph.D. students, Master’s candidates can have a harder time securing scholarships and funding. However, there are a number of universities that do offer funded Master’s programs! “Full funding” refers to financial aid packages for full-time students that include full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the duration of the student’s graduate studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is complementary to one’s studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their master’s students, which is why we recommend researching the financial aid offers provided by all potential Master’s programs in your academic field, including smaller and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad. Florida State University Fully Funded Master’s in Modern Languages
Based in Tallahassee, FL, Florida State University offers a fully funded Master’s degree in modern languages. They offer comprehensive and high-quality MA programs in several languages. MA programs are offered in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Slavic, and East Asian Languages and Cultures. FSU’s Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics offers a wide range of scholarships and other awards to support their students. Many of these awards are supported by the Ada Belle Winthrop-King fund. For students undergoing their MA studies, teaching assistantships are available for up to two years: this includes a tuition waiver covering 100% of tuition and a subsidy for health insurance.
Memorial University Fully Funded Master’s in Modern Languages
Based in Canada, the Memorial University of Newfoundland offers a fully funded Master’s in Modern Languages. The MA in French Studies specializes in the study of the French language, as well as Francophone culture and literature from all around the world. The MA in German Language and Literature may also be taken for either full-time or part-time study. Memorial University offers competitive funding packages to academically eligible, full-time graduate students (both Canadian and international) in applicable research programs. Funding for this MA is a $6,850 stipend.
Middlebury Language Schools Fully Funded Master’s in Modern Languages
Middlebury Language Schools, based in Middlebury, Vermont, offers a fully funded master’s in Modern Languages. Students can complete the MA in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, or Spanish throughout the course of four to six-week summers in Vermont. Middlebury College offers generous financial aid through a number of merit-based fellowships and scholarships for graduate students enrolled in the Languages Schools. Middlebury Language Schools may meet up to 100% of your demonstrated need. During the summer of 2019, 86% of their graduate students received need-based financial aid. The average grant for graduate students was approximately $7,968.
Mississippi State University Fully Funded Master’s in Foreign Languages (French, German, and Spanish)
Mississippi State University, based in Starkville, MS, offers a fully funded master’s in Foreign Languages (French, German, and Spanish). The graduate courses focus on literature and culture, with a strong foundation in language pedagogy. The MA program provides an extremely flexible and interdisciplinary course of study. The Department of Classical & Modern Languages and Literatures provides Teaching Assistantships to qualified graduate students. The department provides Teaching Assistants with a 100% tuition remission and a stipend to pay for living expenses. The majority of M.A. students work for the department as Teaching Assistants.
University of Kansas Fully Funded Master’s in French
The University of Kansas, based in Lawrence, KS, offers a fully funded master’s in French. The Department offers a comprehensive graduate program (M.A. and Ph.D.) in French and Francophone language, literature, and culture. The department does its best to provide funding in the form of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) appointment to all incoming graduate students pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. in French. The appointment includes a starting stipend of approximately $16,250 for the academic year (Fall and Spring), a 100% tuition waiver, and payment of 3 hours’ worth of student fees.
University of Louisiana at Lafayette Fully Funded Master’s in French
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers a fully funded master’s in French. The students will deepen and expand their knowledge of French and Francophone literature and culture and perfect their French language skills. Additionally, students will also actively participate in the Francophone future of Louisiana. The department offers assistantship funding to a select group of approximately 15 graduate students enrolled in the master’s or doctoral programs in French and Francophone Studies, providing tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. Moreover, there are master’s fellowship programs for superior students.
University of Maryland Fully Funded Master’s in French
The University of Maryland, based in College Park, MD, offers a fully funded master’s in French. The M.A. in French language and literature (FRIT) provides students with a solid foundation in French and Francophone literature and culture, in addition to French language and linguistics. Not only does this program introduce M.A. students to current research issues, but they also provide training in higher education pedagogy. All admitted M.A. students are supported for the entirety of their two-year program. In each case, the annual renewal of financial support is based on satisfactory performance and progress in the program. Stipends include tuition remission and health benefits available as part of the funding packages.
University of Massachusetts Amherst Fully Funded Master’s in French and Francophone Studies
The University of Massachusetts Amherst offers a fully funded master’s in French and Francophone Studies. The M.A. in French and Francophone Studies is a two-year, 30-credit program. The program offers financial aid in the form of Teaching Assistantships that covers the full four-semester length of both the M.A. and MAT programs. No separate application is required. Teaching Assistants receive a full tuition credit, as well as a living stipend, which makes the M.A. and MAT programs financially accessible to students of virtually all backgrounds. In addition, the Assistantship covers 95% of the cost of graduate students’ health insurance premium.
University of Memphis Fully Funded Master’s in French and Spanish
Based in Memphis, Tennessee, The University of Memphis offers a fully funded Master’s in French and Spanish. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a program leading to the Master of Arts degree in Romance Languages with a concentration in either French or Spanish. Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. The current stipend is approximately $10,000 per academic year, plus a tuition waiver. Graduate students who obtain a graduate assistantship are usually supported for two academic years, provided that their academic and teaching performances are satisfactory.
University of Mississippi Fully Funded Master’s in Modern Languages
The University of Mississippi offers a fully funded Master’s in Modern Languages. The M.A. in Modern Languages has emphases available in French, German, Spanish, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and TESOL. The Master of Arts in Modern Languages develops students’ analytical thinking skills, scholarship, and abilities to succeed in rewarding careers and/or doctoral programs. The Department of Modern Languages offers financial assistance in the form of scholarships, Graduate Research Assistantships, and Graduate Instructorships. These assistantships pay a stipend of $5,000–$5,250 per semester, also providing a full waiver of graduate tuition.
University Of Nebraska Fully Funded Master’s in Spanish, French and German
The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln offers a fully funded Master’s in Spanish, French, or German. Graduate students thrive in these dynamic programs that combine the advantages of a large, multilingual department in a comprehensive research university with three distinct language sections. The graduate teaching assistantships offered includes tuition remission. In addition, teaching assistants receive a departmental stipend that covers the cost of living in Lincoln. Students are also eligible for departmental merit fellowships to supplement their assistantship, which can be used to cover student fees. Summer teaching is available to students studying Spanish.
University of New Mexico Fully Funded Master’s in French
The University of New Mexico, based in Albuquerque, NM, offers a fully funded Master’s in French. The master’s degree in French provides rigorous and comprehensive training in French literary history, theory, and criticism. This program provides financial support through Teaching Assistantships, Graduate Assistantships, Carol Raymond Scholarships, and other university and extramural funding. Competitive M.A. and Ph.D. students generally receive full support, consisting of tuition remission, health insurance, and an assistantship stipend contingent on successful advancement to a degree.
University of Saskatchewan Fully Funded Master’s in French
The University of Saskatchewan, based in Canada, offers a fully funded Master’s in French. The department provides graduate training toward a master’s degree in French literature, translation, or language studies. All incoming M.A. students are automatically considered for financial aid in the form of fellowships or teaching assistantships awarded by the department or the College of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. No separate application is necessary. For each M.A. student, University Graduate Scholarships and Graduate Teaching Fellowships are available for a maximum of 24 months of total support.
University of South Carolina Fully Funded Master’s in Modern Languages
The University of South Carolina, based in Columbia, SC, offers a fully funded Master’s in Modern Languages. This graduate program options include master’s degrees in Comparative Literature, French, German, and Spanish. Each year, the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers a number of assistantships, which provide stipends between $12,000 and $17,000 depending on the program (M.A. or Ph.D.) rank and workload. University of Tennessee Fully Funded Master’s in Modern Languages
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville offers a fully funded Master’s in modern languages. This graduate program offers an M.A. track in French, German, and Spanish. The Department of Modern Foreign Languages & Literatures promotes an area studies approach (French and Francophone, Germanic, Hispanic) with offerings in literature, translation, and gender/ethnic studies. Financial support for M.A. and Ph.D. candidates is offered, which includes funding for travel to conferences for the presentation of scholarly papers and posters. M.A. students who receive support are funded for two years. Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) stipends are competitive and generally range between $14,700–$18,000 for a 9-month contract. A tuition fee waiver (with a value of up to $31,000/year) and full medical insurance are included.
University of Texas at Arlington Fully Funded Master’s in Spanish or French
The University of Texas at Arlington offers a fully funded master’s in Spanish or French. A 36-hour degree, this program is designed to enhance students’ competence in the French or Spanish language and knowledge of the literature and culture of the French-speaking or Spanish-speaking world. The Department of Modern Languages has Graduate Teaching Assistantships available for graduate students in French and Spanish. Initially, the department provides teaching assistantships (GTA I) to students who have not completed 18 graduate hours. After completing 18 graduate hours, students can become promoted to Graduate Teaching Assistant II (GTA II) and receive a larger stipend.
