As a part of our series on How to Fully Fund Your Master’s Degree, here is a list of universities that offer full funding for Master’s in African American and Africana Studies or fund most students in their master’s program. Master’s degrees in African American and Africana Studies have a variety of career options, including a variety of careers in academia, cultural work, and more.
Fully-funded M.A. programs can be difficult to find. Because most universities focus their funding on Ph.D. students, M.A. candidates can have a harder time securing scholarships and funding. However, there are a number of universities that do offer funded M.A. programs. “Full funding” is a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the duration of the student’s master’s studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is complementary to your studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their master’s students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential M.A. programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Florida International University, MA in African and African Diaspora Studies
(Miami, FL): Each academic year a limited number of graduate students are hired as graduate assistants. Graduate assistantships are allocated on a competitive basis and typically pay a substantial portion of tuition expenses and provide a stipend.
Syracuse University, MA in Pan African Studies
(Syracuse, NY): Teaching assistantships in the Department of African American Studies carry a substantial stipend and remitted tuition of 24 credits. All full-time matriculated graduate students are eligible to hold assistantships.
Temple University, MA in Africology and African American Studies
(Philadelphia, PA): The Department offers some awards and scholarships to graduate students in the Africology and African American Studies MA program. As a graduate student, you may apply for a research or teaching assistantship that provides a basic health insurance plan, a stipend, and tuition remission. Fellowships are available through Temple’s graduate school for students with exceptional academic records.
University of Indiana, African American and African Diaspora Studies
(Bloomington, Indiana): Top incoming AAADS graduate students may be awarded fellowships to support their studies at IU. These prestigious awards carry at least one year of a guaranteed living stipend and full tuition remission. Most of our graduate students receive funding by working as associate instructors or research assistants and these positions come with a living stipend and full tuition remission.
University of Louisville, MA in Pan-African Studies
(Louisville, Kentucky): Students in good standing in the Master of Arts program in Pan-African Studies are eligible for PAS Graduate Assistantships. Assistantships will be awarded initially for one year, renewable for a second year. Assistantships are provided so that students can focus fully on their academic performance and be responsible for meeting this objective.
University of Massachusetts – Boston, MA in American Studies
(Boston, MA): The American Studies MA program offers a limited number of teaching assistantships to full-time students. Most graduate assistants work nine hours or more per week during the time they are supported. Assistants receive a stipend in addition to tuition remission and partial fee payment including health insurance.
