Funding usually comes with the expectation that students will teach or complete research in their field of study.
Not all universities fully fund their Master’s students, which is why researching the financial aid offerings of many different programs, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad, is essential. California Institute of Technology Fully Funded Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
California Institute of Technology, based in Pasadena, CA offers a fully funded Master of Science in mechanical engineering. The MS degree is normally only awarded to students who expect to pursue a PhD degree in mechanical engineering and who do not already have an MS degree in mechanical engineering. Virtually all graduate students in Mechanical Engineering receive financial support for the duration of their studies, which fully pays tuition and provides a stipend for living expenses. This support may take the form of a fellowship, a teaching assistantship, a research assistantship, or a combination of these options.
Iowa State University Fully Funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering
Iowa State University, based in Ames, IA offers a fully funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. The Master of Science (thesis) degree emphasizes graduate research and culminates in the creation of a thesis and associated oral exam. The majority of our graduate students are supported through research assistantships and/or fellowships. Teaching assistantships are determined by the Graduate Committee. Master’s applicants will be considered for 1/2 time research or teaching assistantship with a stipend ranging from $2,100 to $2,150 per month, a 50% tuition scholarship.
MIT Fully Funded Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (SMME)
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), based in Cambridge, MA offers a fully funded Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (SMME). The majority of students in the ME department are supported by research assistantships (RA). Research assistants are appointed by faculty members to perform research on a well-defined project typically sponsored by an external agency. A full-time RA appointment provides a full tuition scholarship plus a stipend.
Ohio State University Fully Funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering
Ohio State University, based in Columbus, OH offers a fully funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. The MS in Mechanical Engineering program is designed to prepare students for successful careers in a variety of specialty areas. The majority of the PhD and MS – Thesis students are supported by a university fellowship or a graduate associate, or both. Students who are supported by a fellowship or an associateship receive a monthly stipend, a fee authorization for tuition and fees, and a health insurance subsidy through the university while they are funded by one of those types of support.
Purdue University Fully Funded Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Purdue University, based in West Lafayette, Indiana offers a fully funded Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Thesis-based Master’s includes conducting independent research and a publishable report (or thesis). Outstanding performance in the thesis option Master’s provides students with a distinct advantage when applying for a Ph.D. program or employment. All thesis-based Master’s students are guaranteed funding, including a tuition waiver and a stipend for as long as they are making satisfactory progress to degree completion and meeting the requirements of the applicable assistantships. This can come in the form of a research assistantship, teaching assistantship, or fellowship.
University of Alaska Fully Funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering
The University of Alaska, based in Fairbanks, AK offers a fully funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. UAF’s mechanical engineering master’s program will give you access to the Alaska Space Grant Program, the UAF Center for Nanosensor Technology, the UAF Automotive Research Center, and the UAF Energy Center—where you can push the boundaries of science and engineering research using the latest engineering tools and software. University of British Columbia Fully Funded Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering
The University of British Columbia, based in Canada offers a fully funded Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering (MASc). Your thesis is prepared with the guidance of your Research Supervisor and typically falls under one of the Department’s Research Areas (biomedical†, design and applied mechanics, mechatronics and manufacturing, thermofluids). The majority of MASc and PhD students in the department are offered research assistantships (RAs) by faculty members. RAs are funded by research grants for specific projects which almost always constitute thesis projects. RAs may be held in conjunction with Teaching Assistantships (TAs) and some scholarships. University of Saskatchewan Fully Funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering
The University of Saskatchewan, based in Canada offers a fully funded Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. In the M.Sc. programs, graduate students complete coursework and a project. All graduate programs are conducted under the supervision of a faculty member. Most thesis-based graduate students in the College of Engineering receive funding during their studies (e.g., scholarships, stipends, awards, research fellowships, and teaching assistantships). Stipends and scholarships are $14,000-$18,000/year for M.Sc. students. 50% of students receive teaching assistantships, some students receive College of Engineering awards.
University of Toronto Fully Funded Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering
The University of Toronto, based in Canada offers a fully funded Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering. MASc students complete a thesis supervised by an MIE professor. A stepping stone to a doctoral degree, the MASc is ideal for students who aspire to a rewarding career in research, whether in academia or industry. Registered MASc candidates receive enough funding to cover tuition and incidental fees. In addition, MASc candidates receive a minimum of $16,000 per year for up to two years. Most students earn more than the minimum as a result of teaching assistantships and scholarships.
University of Waterloo Fully Funded Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering
The University of Waterloo, based in Canada offers a fully funded Master of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering (MASc). The MASc program emphasizes high-level independent research by candidates. The topic of the thesis and the choice of courses are decided by the student and their supervisor(s). Candidates will participate in a research program generally involving either theory or experimentation, or both. All full-time students in the MASc are guaranteed a minimum level of funding while they are within their program time limits and in good academic standing.
